Ever wondered how organs are donated. I just came to know about it and this process needs improvement (through laboratory research, of course) on how the donation process should be and what all parameters should be considered when performing a donation. Some of the parameters that I can think of are:
1. Who is giving the organ – can he live without that organ (if at all he is alive)
2. Who is in the queue for that donation – first come first serve is legit
3. Who is compatible (my organs are too big or too small for a lot you, and there is this difference in blood type and all that)
4. Surviving quotient – If I give my organ to X, how long and comfortably will he survive; If I give it to Y, how long and comfortably will he survive. (If there is a substantial change of live expectancy for one guy to the other, this parameter will be very important)
5. Wait time – If I am waiting for a really long time now, I should get the next organ that is up for donation. (This is an interdependent parameter)
It all boils down to *how do you determine what is correct*, that’s the whole point; that’s why we need medical procedures to determine the guy who deserves and needs the next organ that is up for donation. There is so much room for *bias* that the organ-transplant policy maker needs to work on.
